When it came time to replace the pump at my all-solar home, I decided on a Grundfos SQE pump. The staff at Rain Harvesting Supplies helped talk me through my particular application. I wanted a pump I could dial down to a precise rate of flow to keep my buried cistern full without running the well dry or over-taxing my solar system. Expert advice and great customer service made me feel confident the installation would be a success.

Having a strong interest in clean water and sustainability, I insisted on building in a rainwater catchment system in my new retirement home. The system catches all roof runoff water, stores it in a 10,000 gallon cistern and supplies water to the toilets, laundry (cold water) and landscape irrigation system. Along with my contractor, we turned to Rain Harvesting Supplies for the turn-key solution. The system is fairly sophisticated and required a knowledgeable subcontractor to make the installation. In our remote area, we had trouble finding a qualified subcontractor and had to call Rain Harvesting Supplies to come in and check things out. Rain Harvesting Supplies did just that and left us with detailed instructions and parts that allowed the plumber to finish the job. Everything has worked great.

Friends ask me how I justified the system. I tell them that if you have plenty of water and you look at today's costs of water then you will have a hard time justifying such an installation. However, if you include intangibles, such as rainwater runoff management, then the costs are more reasonable. Every one that I know spends the first 3 to 5 years and significant resources in a new home trying to make sure that the landscape is situated properly to control rainwater runoff. With a well-designed rainwater harvesting system, you must design all runoff before you pour the foundation to ensure that all the gutters get to the cistern. With this larger view of rainwater management and the potential for higher future water costs, systems like this have value.
